Last weekend was dehorning time with all but one calf dehorned (Gypsy - Dora's heifer who may be scurred - I'll check her again when I wean her). I have been fortunate to have been taught by a vet I used to work for (I am a veterinary nurse when I'm not being a mum etc) how to inject local anaesthetic to make the procedure much more pleasant for all involved. I must admit I do enjoy seeing the results of my hanywork - due to it being drummed into me that you MUST make sure there is a full ring of hair around the horn when removing it I have not had a regrowth yet. Dexters are renowned for regrowth if not done properly which looks very ugly.
In my AI program it looks like Boaday has taken to Black Opal Gianni. Encore cycled only 9 days after being inseminated which according to the AI technician can happen a bit in dairy breeds so I have to wait until early next month to see if she is pregnant to Kirup Park Thackeray. Ebony has been put to Thackeray also - I am hoping to improve hindquarter width in these 2 girls. The offspring I have seen of Thackeray have hindquarters to die for! Elsa has been put to Thomas' Grande Red Royale & Esprit to Woodmagic Hedgehog.
Show preparation has just started. I have chosen my team for Launceston Royal - Doral, Elsa, Finesse & Faline. Doral has a beautiful heifer at foot (Guess - no that is her name not what you have to do!) & has only been shown once as a heifer. Elsa did some shows last season with Sarah handling her. Her calf, Gazelle, (Elsa's not Sarah's!) is a lovely heifer as well. Finesse & Faline have not been shown so let's hope they behave themselves!
