My numbers have crept up to the extent that I MUST sell quite a few. My ideal numbers should be about 15 to 20 breeders but this year I have put 30 cows & heifers in with the bull! I have updated my sales list and reduced prices. I will probably have some commercial (unregistered) heifers available I haven't advertised. With 9 heifers born this season I desperately need to find homes for a heap! My problem is I am too soft.
It has been extremely dry this summer, I think it's been the driest since we have come to Tasmania (8 years). Normally we have a tinge of green all summer but this year it has dried off completely. 17mm of rain the other night has brightened things up a little. Feed is still plentiful although the cows are becoming a little fussy - calling to me "We're hungry - there is nothing in here to eat!" when in fact there is at least 3 days' worth of feed there!
The other day I saw our resident platypus! I saw him/her a few months ago but due to the distance I was away I wasn't 100% sure it was one. I was at the dam with my twins Thomas & Alex and their remote control boats they got for Christmas when I saw him. From the size of him I think he is a "teenager" - possibly a baby from a neighbour's dam setting up his home in ours hopefully to start his own family. It would be fantastic if the platypus population increases. Our swans are still raising their babies - I think it still is the same pair that were here when we moved here.
'Till next time
